Quick Overview
AI marketing for naturopaths means writing your website so that AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode can understand you and quote you when someone asks about a practitioner like you.
It is also called Answer Engine Optimisation, or AEO.
According to James Burgin, former naturopath and digital marketing strategist, the core of it is simple: turn your subheadings into the questions clients actually ask, answer each one in the first sentence, write every section as a self-contained capsule, and put one observation from your own clinical experience into each capsule.
Keep your facts consistent everywhere online, keep your pages fresh, and check that your site is not accidentally blocking AI crawlers.
You have just finished a good consult. The client is relieved, you are running ten minutes late, and somewhere between the notes and the next appointment you remember the website.
The one that still says “Our Approach” at the top of the services page. The one a client last week said she could not find, even though she had asked ChatGPT for “a naturopath who understands perimenopause” and it named two other people.
That is the whole problem in one moment. You are good at this. AI does not know.
Why does AI keep naming other practitioners instead of you?
[Capsule Answer]
AI names the practitioners it can understand. It reads your pages in short chunks, looks for the passage that answers the question, and checks whether other places on the web agree with what your site says about you. If your answer is buried, vague or inconsistent, AI moves on to someone whose answer is clearer.
When someone asks an AI assistant a health question, the assistant does not read your website the way a person would.
It breaks each page into passages, pulls the passage that best answers the question, and weighs that passage against everything else it knows about you from directories, associations, reviews and videos.
Three things about that process matter for a naturopath.
- AI reads in chunks, not pages. If the answer is in paragraph four, under a heading called “Our Approach”, it is effectively invisible.
- AI trusts consensus, not links. Ahrefs’ 2026 study of 75,000 brands found that mentions by other people and places predict AI visibility far better than backlinks or domain authority.
- AI likes fresh, specific pages. Ahrefs also reports that around three-quarters of ChatGPT’s most-cited pages were updated in the previous 30 days.
None of this requires technical skill. It requires the same thing a good consult requires: clarity, specificity and the willingness to say what you actually know.
What does AI marketing for naturopaths actually involve?
[Capsule Answer]
It involves four pillars: mapping the real questions clients ask, answering them clearly in a citable structure, making your credentials and experience visible and consistent, and being mentioned by other people and places.
The 2026 update to those pillars adds three writing habits: question subheads, immediate answers and capsule content.
At Thriving Practitioners, we teach AEO through four pillars. They have not changed.
What has changed is how precisely we now understand what AI rewards inside each one, and the good news is that it keeps getting simpler.
“AI isn’t about replacing the human touch in healthcare. It’s about amplifying your authentic voice so more people can discover your healing gifts.”
James Burgin, former naturopath and digital marketing strategist, creator of Metaphysical SEO
Pillar 1: Map the questions, then map the fan-out
When a client asks an AI, “Is there a naturopath in Melbourne who can help with perimenopause?”, the assistant quietly runs several smaller searches before it answers: what a naturopath does for perimenopause, whether it is safe alongside HRT, what a first appointment involves, what it costs.
Research suggests this fan-out can run to dozens of sub-queries for a single prompt.
You may never rank for the big question. But if you have the clearest answer to “is it safe alongside HRT”, you get pulled into the answer anyway.
So under each of your core topics, list six to ten sub-questions, and make sure each one has a home on your site.
Pillar 2: Question subheads, immediate answers, capsules
This is where most of the practical work lives, and it comes down to three habits.
- Question subheads. Every H2 is the exact question a client would ask. “Can I see a naturopath while I am on medication?” rather than “Our Approach”.
- Immediate answers. The first sentence under the subhead is the answer. Yes, no, or the number. Explanation comes after, never before.
- Capsule content. Each section is a self-contained passage of roughly 50 to 150 words that still makes complete sense if AI lifts it out on its own.
Here is a capsule in full, so you can see the shape.
EXAMPLE CAPSULE: 112 WORDS
How long does it take to see results with naturopathy for bloating?
Most people notice some change within two to four weeks, and a fuller picture takes around three months. Bloating usually has more than one driver, so the first month is about finding yours: meal timing, stress, fibre type, or a bacterial imbalance. In my Brunswick clinic the three things I check first are how quickly someone eats, whether symptoms follow particular foods, and what their stress looks like at 3pm.
I use a food and symptom diary before any testing. If nothing has shifted by week six, we reassess rather than push on.
Notice the fourth sentence. “The three things I check first” is a sentence only a practitioner can write. AI has read every general article about bloating. It has not read what you notice in the room.
That single observational sentence is what the research world calls information gain, and it is your unfair advantage over every supplement company blog on the internet.
Notice the specifics too: Brunswick, 3pm, week six, a food and symptom diary. Those are entities. They help AI build an accurate picture of who you are and what you actually do.
“Our clinic” tells it nothing. “ANTA-registered naturopath in Brunswick” tells it everything.
Pillar 3: Consistent anchor facts, and an open front door
Write down five or six verifiable statements about yourself: your registration, your qualification, where you practise, what you focus on, how long you have been practising.
Repeat them word for word on your website, your Google Business Profile, your association listing, your directories and your social bios. AI learns by repetition, and inconsistency reads as doubt.
Then check the front door is open. Some hosts and security settings block AI crawlers by default, and Ahrefs reports that just under six per cent of all websites currently block OpenAI’s crawler, often without the owner knowing.
Type yourdomain.com/robots.txt into a browser. If you see “Disallow” lines under GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended, nothing else in this article will work until that is fixed.
Pillar 4: The consensus factor
AI treats a fact as true when several independent places agree on it. Big brands chase listicles and Reddit threads to build that consensus.
Your version is simpler and closer to home: your association’s member listing and the health directories carrying your anchor facts, a podcast interview or two each year, peers naming you in their content, client reviews that describe the experience rather than the outcome, and your own channels all saying the same thing.
If you have been waiting for a reason to record video, this is it.
Ahrefs found YouTube mentions were the strongest single predictor of AI visibility in its 2026 study.
You do not need production values. Phone, good light, one question per video, two to four minutes.
Say the question and your name and suburb out loud, answer it the way you would in the room, and paste the written capsule into the description.
KEEP LEARNING WITH THE COMMUNITY
These principles are the subject of our Friday Q&A on 4 September 2026, where we work through members’ own pages live. Growth Hub members get the replay, the companion guide and the Action Plans that follow.
If you would like to be in the room next time, the Growth Hub is $49 per month at thrivingpractitioners.com, cancel any time.
What does this look like in a real practice?
[Capsule Answer]
It looks like small, repeatable edits rather than a website rebuild. In our Friday Q&A sessions, the members who move first are the ones who take one existing page, rewrite one section as a capsule with a clinical observation in it and then repeat that habit weekly.
At a recent Friday Q&A, one member, a naturopath who had paused all of her marketing for a month because it had become overwhelming, described the rule that got her moving again: every time she publishes an article, she condenses it into a short post for her Google Business Profile.
One piece of thinking, two places, no extra writing.
That is the AEO habit in miniature.
She is not building anything new. She is taking the thinking she already does and giving it a second, more citable home. The same thing happens when you rewrite one service page section as a capsule: the knowledge was always there, it just was not shaped so a machine could lift it.
In that same session I used the example that has become our shorthand for information gain: “the three things I check first when someone has been avoiding foods for a year.”
If your page contains a sentence like that, and your competitor’s page contains “we take a holistic approach”, there is no contest about which one gets quoted.
What should you do this week?
[Capsule Answer]
Do four things: run the two-minute crawler check, rewrite one service page section as a capsule, run the three-prompt gap check, and add a “how did you hear about us” question to your intake form.
Together they take under two hours.
- Check the front door (2 minutes). Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Look for Disallow lines under the AI crawler names above. If in doubt, send it to your web person.
- Rewrite one section as a capsule (45 minutes). Pick your most important service page. Turn one subhead into a client question, answer it in the first sentence, add one clinical observation and one specific name. Use the prompt below if you want help drafting.
- Run the gap check (10 minutes). Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode: “Recommend a naturopath in [suburb] for [your niche]. Name specific practitioners and say why.” Write down who is named and where the answer came from.
- Ask at intake (10 minutes). Add “How did you hear about us?” to your booking or intake form, with “ChatGPT or another AI” as an option. Most AI referrals never appear in analytics, so this is the only measure that catches them.
A prompt you can paste into Claude or ChatGPT for step two:
CAPSULE REWRITE PROMPT:
I am a [modality] practising in [suburb, city], registered with [association]. I focus on [niche].
Rewrite the section below as a self-contained capsule of 80 to 130 words. Rules: the heading is the exact question a client would ask; the first sentence answers it directly; use simple subject-verb-object sentences; include one observation from my clinical experience that I will supply; name specific things rather than generic ones; no outcome promises or therapeutic claims, observational and educational language only; Australian English; no em dashes.
My clinical observation to include: [the three things I check first when…]
Section to rewrite: [paste]
Ask me clarifying questions until you are 95 per cent clear on the task.
Frequently asked questions
I want help doing this properly. Where do I start?
Start with a Visibility Gold Roadmap, a personalised diagnostic of what is working on your site, what is holding you back and the exact order to fix it. If you would rather learn alongside other practitioners, the Growth Hub gives you twice-monthly Friday Q&A, the replay library, and the Action Plans for $49 per month. Both are at thrivingpractitioners.com.
What is AI marketing for naturopaths?
AI marketing for naturopaths is the practice of writing and organising your online presence so that AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Mode can understand who you are, what you focus on and where you practise, and then cite you when someone asks. It is also called Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO). It builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
Is AEO different from SEO?
Yes, in goal but not in foundation. SEO aims to rank your page in a list of links. AEO aims to have your words quoted inside an AI-generated answer. Both reward clear structure, real expertise and consistent facts about you. AEO adds three habits: question subheads, an immediate answer under each one, and self-contained capsules AI can lift whole.
Do I need a developer or new software?
No. Every principle in this article can be done in your website editor or a notes app. The only technical step is a two-minute check of yourdomain.com/robots.txt to confirm AI crawlers are not blocked, and if that looks unfamiliar you can send it to your web person or post it in the community.
How long does it take to see results?
Many practitioners see their name appear in AI answers within a few months of rewriting their key pages, and most notice the change first through clients saying “ChatGPT mentioned you”. Treat it as a habit rather than a project: refresh your top pages monthly and run the gap check monthly. Results are probabilistic, so watch trends, not single answers.
Is it compliant to write about conditions and outcomes?
It is compliant when you describe and educate rather than promise. Write about the patterns you notice, the questions you ask and how you decide, not about cures or guaranteed results. That keeps you within TGA advertising rules and, helpfully, it is exactly the observational, specific language AI systems trust.
Does this work for acupuncturists, nutritionists and other modalities?
Yes. The examples here are naturopathic because that is my background, but the principles are modality-neutral. Replace “naturopath” with your own modality and registration body and every step applies unchanged.
Ready to become the answer?
If you want a personalised starting point, the Visibility Gold Roadmap is a diagnostic of your practice’s visibility: what is working, what is holding you back, and the exact sequence to fix it. Here’s the details to get you visible and boost your bookings…
If you would rather do the work in company, the Thriving Practitioners Growth Hub gives you weekly Friday Q&A sessions, a full replay library, step-by-step Action Plans, interactive client education resources for your website, and a WhatsApp group where practitioners share what they are building. $49 per month, cancel any time.
And if you are ready for a website that has all of this built in, PractitionerPro is a complete practitioner website, built for you on a platform designed for AI-era visibility: entity-optimised pages, open FAQ structure, and everything this article describes, done for you.
Whichever you choose, start with the capsule. One section, this week. You already know what you would say in the room. Now say it where the machines can hear you.
Warmly,
James
